University of Auckland wins international award for student engagement and leadership
26 October 2021
The University of Auckland has won an international award from the Global Consortium of Entrepreneurship Centres (GCEC) for Outstanding Student Engagement and Leadership.
The GCEC is a consortium of 250 leading university entrepreneurship programmes that work together to share best practices, develop programmes and initiatives, and collaborate and assist each other in advancing, strengthening and celebrating the role of universities in educating the entrepreneurs of tomorrow. The GCEC conference and awards have been held in different locations over its 20-year history. This year the conference was held in Baltimore, USA, with more than 500 people attending in person or virtually, and more than 70 breakout sessions taking place.
The Student Engagement and Leadership Award was for the category of schools with more than 5,000 students and is shared with Israel’s Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. The University of Auckland’s submission was from the Business School’s Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE) which offers a range of free extra-curricular opportunities for students and staff of all faculties.
The awards have a rigorous application process with finalists reviewed by a panel of 24 judges who have previously won GCEC awards. Judges’ feedback for the University of Auckland’s entry included commentary that “The Auckland program has it all — including a metrics-driven submission…I also like how leadership is encouraged among students, and not just among students who have already been identified as leaders. I hope you invite these folks to speak at the conference. There is a lot that many of our U.S. universities could emulate in these creative efforts. True excellence!”
CIE Director Darsel Keane says “Our team are honoured and humbled to receive this award alongside our peers at Ben-Gurion and all of the other category winners. CIE has worked hard over the years iterating programme design to ensure that we have the best possible infrastructure to support our students to develop their leadership and community development skills, alongside other entrepreneurship skills. We put student engagement at the heart of our work and it is wonderful to have this mahi acknowledged internationally by subject matter experts.”
