University of Auckland named a contender in United States Entrepreneurship Education Excellence awards
11 November 2022
The University of Auckland has been named as a finalist for the Entrepreneurship Education Excellence Awards by the United States Association of Small Business and Entrepreneurship (USASBE). It is the only university outside of North America to be named as a finalist.
“The quality of the applications this year was higher than ever,” said Judi Eyles, programme awards co-chair. “We are seeing programmes really put together strong cases for these awards, making the selection of finalists a real challenge.”
The University of Auckland has been named as a finalist for the Excellence in Co-Curricular Innovation Award category for Summer Lab, a four-week programme delivered by the Business School’s Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE). Professor Susan Watson, Dean of the Business School says, “It is an honour to be named as a finalist alongside other innovative universities and colleges and a testament to CIE’s provision of world-class entrepreneurship experiences to students in the Business School and across the university.” Summer Lab is a free programme run during the summer holidays, open to students of all faculties at the University of Auckland. Over the course of the programme participants learn about the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs), identify a problem to solve, form teams and come up with a business idea and plan based around their solution.
CIE Director Darsel Keane says “We used the term lab as a descriptor for the programme as it’s truly a place to experiment with concepts of innovation and entrepreneurship. The experiences, networks and knowledge students gain through participating in Summer Lab will last a lifetime.”
Consideration for the USASBE awards involves a comprehensive application, video submission and interview. USASBE award winners will be announced in January at its annual conference in Florida.
Julienne Shields, CEO of USASBE, says “Advancing entrepreneurship education necessitates that educators share the best of what we do so that it can be replicated and translated to other campuses and communities.”
