Alumni profile: Dr Yeri Kim

Evaluating the value of new health technologies in order to solve a health problem and improve the quality of lives has been a mix of passion and curiosity for Yeri.
While studying for her PhD with the University of Auckland’s Faculty of Medical Health and Sciences, Yeri developed three patents in New Zealand and the US for the treatment of retinal eye diseases. To develop this kind of entrepreneurial mindset, Yeri needed “the courage to detach myself from the standard way of thinking and to share my passion and lead others in a new course of action.”
“My innovative and entrepreneurial mindset begins with passion and curiosity. I am looking for patterns, particularly in data, so that I can find connections and explore unmet needs in healthcare”.
“During my PhD, I learned how to design, hypothesise, test and evaluate new ideas. This can be a bumpy road at times but my PhD has taught me that it is all part of the learning and discovery process. I am able to apply this mindset to my career.”
Her advice for anyone considering an entrepreneurial pathway is: “Explore your child-like curiosity and take your ideas to the world!”
