Unleash your stories: Wednesday Davis

Marine science postgraduate student Wednesday Davis is passionate about environmental sustainability and conservation. Having worked with sea turtles at Kelly Tarlton’s Sea Life Aquarium, Wednesday has seen the effects of plastic pollution in our oceans. This has brought about a desire to reduce people’s daily use of plastic, starting with her own.

Wednesday’s story

Wednesday decided she should start carrying her own portable cutlery holder to reduce her consumption of single use cutlery and straws while out and about. After some online research and looking at existing products on the market, she set about designing her own cutlery holder, repurposing old fabrics and using cutlery from home. Reducing the number of resources she consumed in acquiring a cutlery holder was a priority.

While at Unleash Space Wednesday has been able to use an overlock sewing machine and colourful scrap fabrics provided by the space to brighten her cutlery holder and make it her own. She has also been making use of the creative technologists’ knowledge.

Wednesday is making steady progress on her project and is pleased with the results of her innovation thus far. However, she wants to continue to experiment with different design patterns to find the most aesthetic and user-friendly option.

While this currently is solely a project for Wednesday herself, and to share with family and friends, she sees potential to sell these cutlery holders in the future. She wants to use second hand cutlery and materials from op shops, continuing to repurpose materials and minimising her product consumption.
