NZ Hi-Tech Awards are helping kiwi stars to shine
The NZ Hi-Tech Awards celebrate New Zealand’s most successful hi-tech companies and highest achieving individuals, helping to raise awareness of the importance of technological innovation to New Zealand’s prosperity.
The University of Auckland is an official supporter of the NZ Hi-Tech Awards through both its knowledge mobilisation and commercialisation company UniServices, as well as the Business School’s Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE).
CIE Director Darsel Keane says “CIE offers free development and networking opportunities to students and staff of all faculties of the University of Auckland, opening possibilities for participants to explore how they can stand out and create impact through innovative careers or start-ups. For the last 21 years we have run entrepreneurship development programmes such as Velocity, and more recently we now also run two innovation hubs where we deliver hundreds of technology equipment training workshops each year, further supporting talent development. It’s great to see our alumni making a difference in the world, noticeably through the NZ Hi-Tech Awards.”
Among this year’s finalists are CIE alumni including the founders of Kami, Kitea Health, Toku Eyes, Mission Ready and Kara Technologies.
Darsel says “The University of Auckland makes a significant contribution to Auckland’s technology innovation community not only through founders, but also through innovative talent. When you look at a company such as NZ Hi-Tech finalist Rocket Lab for example, they have nearly 100 University of Auckland alumni and students working for them.”
Darsel says the NZ Hi-Tech Awards has an important role to play in supporting New Zealand’s economy. “New Zealand has so much current capability and future potential and as a nation we need to build on our confidence and commitment to growing our technology ecosystem. The NZ Hi-Tech Awards has helped foster the community.”
CIE spin-out company Auror, who have developed a retail crime intelligence and loss prevention platform, are previous winners. Phil Thomson, Co-founder and CEO says “Winning the Most Innovative Hi-Tech Software Solution award helped showcase Auror’s impact and innovation to our current and future team, shareholders, and new investors. Being part of the Hi-Tech Awards community has been inspirational and educational.”
The 2024 NZ Hi-Tech Awards winners will be announced on May 24 at the Gala Dinner at Spark Arena.
