Staff profile: Yaqi Zhang – CIE Hub Coordinator
Can you tell me a little bit about your background and how you ended up at CIE?
I spent most of my childhood in China before continuing my studies in Canada. At the University of Ottawa, I pursued degrees in sociology and economics. After graduating, I moved to New Zealand to pursue a master’s degree in law. Following completion of my law degree last year (the official graduation ceremony is scheduled for May this year), I stumbled upon an opportunity to join CIE through the University’s website. I thought to myself, “Why not?” Perhaps I could explore something beyond law. I visited with the CIE team at its innovation hub Unleash Space and found it to be incredibly welcoming and energetic. It felt like the perfect place for me to stay and explore new endeavours.
What is your favourite part about your job?
I’ve found working on campus to be a source of joy due to the uplifting environment and atmosphere it provides. Also, as a hub coordinator, I enjoy preparing for each event at our centre. Supporting the success of these events brings me a sense of fulfilment.
What advice would you give people who aren’t sure if innovation and entrepreneurship is for them?
Just give it a try! Don’t worry if you’re not familiar with something. Before joining the CIE team, I didn’t know much about business — I only took a few business-related courses in university. Initially, I thought it would be tough to understand. But now, I’m doing fine here and loving the vibe. Now, I’m keen to explore more about innovation and entrepreneurship.
If you could have dinner with anyone in the world, who would it be and why?
My twin sister! I haven’t seen her since last year, which is the longest we’ve ever been apart since birth. And since I moved to New Zealand, we haven’t had many chances to meet each other. Being with her always makes me feel happy and relaxed. Also, I’m hoping my sister will be cooking dinner for me when we meet each other. She’s talented at making yummy food.
When you’re not working, what will we find you doing?
Travelling! I love travelling to different countries and exploring different cultures. I love Disney theme parks and have been to them all – my favourite is in Tokyo. But if I stay at home, I like to spend my time watching movies, playing guitar and the piano.
