Staff profile: Yifan Li – CIE Engagement Adviser

Tell us a little about your background and how you ended up at the Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE).

My career began as a news editor, where I also managed social media accounts and discovered my passion for marketing and engagement for the first time. After working in marketing for a travel agency, I became a marketing manager at a large education provider, helping international students pursue higher education in New Zealand. When a friend told me about the opportunity at CIE, I did some research and reading and realised it was the perfect role for me, combining my marketing experience with the exciting opportunity to work with students. During my interview, I was struck by the vibrant atmosphere, with students actively creating and experimenting with technology in the Makers space.

What does your job involve?

My job primarily involves engaging with the students and staff with all our events and opportunities centred around entrepreneurship and innovation. I work to inspire and connect our community, ensuring they are aware of the opportunities available to them. Additionally, I focus on showcasing the achievements of our alumni and highlighting the university as a powerhouse of innovation and entrepreneurship.

What is your favourite part of your job?

No two days are ever the same at CIE, and that’s one of the things I love most about my role. Every day, I get to work on something different—whether it’s designing materials, collaborating with colleagues and students, writing articles, or driving marketing and engagement for upcoming opportunities. Since joining the team just over two months ago, I’ve had the chance to immerse myself in a wide range of opportunities, and the fast-paced, ever-evolving nature of the work keeps things exciting and fulfilling.

What advice would you give people who aren’t sure if innovation and entrepreneurship is for them?

My passion for indoor plants began unexpectedly when I saw a variegated monstera for the first time at a friend’s home a few years ago. I never imagined I would develop such a deep love for plants before my 60s. In the same way, innovation and entrepreneurship might feel distant or unfamiliar at first, but if you give it a try, it could ignite a passion you never anticipated. You might discover a whole new world of possibilities and creativity that transforms your life or even the world! Sometimes, the most unexpected interests turn into lifelong passions, opening doors you didn’t even know existed.

If you could have dinner with anyone in the world, who would it be and why?

It would be my grandparents. I spent a large part of my childhood with them, as my parents were busy working. Sadly, they passed away many years ago, and I wasn’t able to be there to say goodbye. Having the chance to see them again and share one more meal with them would be incredibly special to me.

When you’re not working, what would we find you doing?

When I’m not working, you’ll likely find me tending to my indoor plants. I also love spending time with my wife and our little dog, either taking walks or exploring new parks together. Cooking is another passion of mine, and I love trying out new recipes and experimenting in the kitchen.
